Auxiliary Services Fast Facts

Auxiliary Services consists of seven departments that support the education function of the school system.  Although sometimes not as visible as our instruction counterparts, Auxiliary Services addresses a wide range of logistical issues.

The seven departments include:

  • Auxiliary Services Administration
  • Child Nutrition
  • Information Technology
  • Maintenance
  • Printing Services
  • Safety
  • Transportation

Fast Facts on each department follow:

Auxiliary Services Administration

This department coordinates and supervises the work of all Auxiliary Services departments.  In addition, it oversees long-range capital planning and major construction projects for the system.  This department handles many system insurance matters including property insurance, general liability, automobile insurance and other coverage's. One of the goals of Auxiliary Services Administration is to better support instruction, using examples from government, the private sector, and other systems of education.  Our motto is:  Economy, Efficiency, and Effectiveness.

Child Nutrition

Child Nutrition employs approximately 222 persons engaged in providing meals to our student population.  This department serves approximately 15,000 lunches and 4,500 breakfasts per school day.  Each lunch meets applicable recommendations of the Dietary Guidelines for Americans.  The standard for school lunches is to provide one-third of the recommended dietary allowances of protein, Vitamin A, Vitamin C, iron, calcium and calories.

We spend approximately $3 million annually for food, not including the $450,000 in food donations to our system from the USDA Food Distribution Program.

Maintenance

Over 76 maintenance employees serve our system.  Our employee's qualifications span the entire breadth of the construction industry, from electricians to wastewater operators and asbestos inspectors. We work under a computerized work order system that allows us to track all time and materials.  In preparation for the opening of school,

  • 2,892 work orders were completed within the months of June and July
  • 736 work orders (including 147 air conditioning calls) were responded to within the first three weeks of school

Our Maintenance Department also supports the efforts of our custodial staff.  During the month of August alone, $30,538.88 in janitorial supplies was delivered to our campuses.

Printing Services

Printing Services is comprised of 4 full-time employees.

Printing Services has the most up-to-date and most comprehensive copier technology of any civilian facility in Onslow County and is one of only two in eastern North Carolina with a fully integrated and networked color/high speed black and white copier system.

Printing Services is, in terms of production output, the largest civilian printing facility in Onslow County, producing approximately 12,500,000 units in fiscal year 2002-2003.  (One unit = one 8 ½ x 11 sheet of paper, printed on one side.)

Printing services processed approximately 2,200 individual printing orders in FY2002-2003.  It averaged 1,000,000 copies per month produced from both copiers and offset presses.

In an effort to be proactive, Printing Services and Auxiliary Services Administration completed a review of all forms in use by schools within the system.  Through a combination of form standardization and outright elimination, this process reduced the total number of forms within our system by 175.

After the standardization process, Printing Services instituted a more commercial-like catalog form order system resulting in the production and delivery of 398,865 standardized forms in preparation of the new school year.

Safety & Security

The Safety Department's primary purpose is to ensure the workplace safety of the employees of the school system.  This department tracks workplace injuries and identifies areas of safety concern by department or school and type.

We produce a monthly safety newsletter, maintain a lending library of safety tapes, and coordinate monthly safety training for staff.  In addition, the department has headed the creation of our Return to Work program, which seeks to restore injured employees to their former duties as quickly as possible.

The Safety Department also conducts announced and unannounced safety inspections of our campus sites.

Transportation

With 276 buses, the Onslow County School System Transportation Department is the largest civilian transportation system located in Onslow County. These buses make 786 runs per day, averaging approximately 16,952.5 miles daily. That equates to 3,051,450 miles traveled each year.  To put this in better perspective, this is the equivalent of circling the Earth at its equator 122.05 times per year.

The Transportation Department runs on a budget of $5,298,672, with all State funding being based on the system's efficiency rating.  The system has been rated 91.58% efficient by North Carolina, allowing the maximum state support possible. The system is also inspected annually by the N.C. Department of Public Instruction for safe and efficient operations, and has produced exceptional scores for the past two years ranking among the top 10 within the state.

The TIMS or (Transportation Information Management System) within the Transportation Department is a computer program which plots all bus routes in the most efficient method possible to pick up all the students enrolled within the system.
