Transportation

The Transportation Department conveys approximately 14,000 students to 36 school sites using 230 state-owned yellow buses, 14 federally-owned buses, 3 OCLC yellow buses and 47 activity buses. Additionally, over 200 Maintenance Department and School vehicles are maintained and serviced by this department.

School buses make 786 bus runs per day, or approximately 16,952.5 miles.  This equates to 3,051,450 miles traveled each year.  Needless to say, this represents an enormous enterprise.

Buses run multiple routes in order to maximize the investment the county has in each bus and driver.  Buses cost approximately $78,000 each.  Maintenance costs are also considerable.  Therefore, it is important to both fully utilize the asset and maximize the life cycle of the vehicle.  A staff of 18 mechanics works steadily to maintain the fleet.

For managerial purposes, the school district has been divided into eight Transportation Zones, with Transportation Coordinators having supervisory authority over the drivers and monitors within their particular areas.  Coordinators typically have extensive transportation-field experience and have received additional, specialized training.
