Welcome To Federal Programs
Welcome to the Onslow County Schools Division of Federal Programs. The mission of Federal Programs is to assist students in meeting North Carolina's challenging academic content and performance standards and to provide teachers with the most current skills, techniques, and materials. The Title I program endorses the Onslow County School system's and the community's vision of "excellence in education" for all students in order to ensure a quality and equitable learning environment. Challenging experiences will be provided to assist every student in mastering the essential skills necessary for life-long learning.
The Federal Programs Division includes the ESEA Title I program, the preschool program the English as a Second Language program, the Academic Derby Program and the Sponsors for Academic Talent program.
The Title I program is funded under the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) of 2001. The Title I program offers a variety of services for participating schools, which may include: additional teachers and support staff, extra time for instruction, a variety of teaching methods and materials, smaller classes, additional training for staff, and an extended school year.
The preschool program is center-based at seven elementary schools and one preschool center. The classes are funded through Exceptional Children, Head Start, More at Four and Title I. Students are selected for the preschool program based on the specific program requirements. The objective is to provide services to four-year olds in an inclusive environment. There are separate classrooms for three year olds and for four year old exceptional children who need a separate setting. The purpose of the preschool program is to prepare the students for a successful school career through developmentally appropriate learning opportunities.
The English as a Second Language program provides non-English speaking students with intensive instruction in the English language so that they will be able to access content in the regular curriculum. During the 08 - 09 and 09 - 10 school years three academies were established at Northwoods Elementary, Northwoods Park Middle and Southwest High School to meet the needs of newcomers who need intensive instruction in the English language before they are able to handle content. The goal is to return students to their home school when they are able to be placed in regular classrooms.
The Academic Derby program is based on "college bowl" in which two schools compete to answer questions. There are competitions at the Elementary, Middle and High School levels. All competitions are aired on local cable channels and are streamed so that families may access them by computer.
The Sponsors for Academic Talent, Inc. program is a private 501(c)(3) agency that works in cooperation with the Onslow County Schools. The purpose of the program is to provide scholarships to graduates of the Onslow County Schools who meet academic and community service requirements. All requirements and guidelines are made by the Board of Directors of SAT, Inc. not the Onslow County School system.
